2023-12-06: RetroNetCall on OCTOI core yate+dahdi-trunkdev

Added by laforge 4 days ago

We're happy to announce the next incarnation of RetroNetCall, the retronetworking oriented spin-off of OsmoDevCall

This time, laforge (and maybe some others) will give a tour of divf, the central office of the OCTOI network based on yate + dahdi-trunkdev

We'll look into how subscriber E1 terminate in osmo-e1d + dahid-trunkdev, how that feeds into yate, how the routing/dialplan works, as well as the new SS7/ISUP interconnects to the two EWSD.

When: Wednesday, December 6, 2023 from 20:00 CET

Time Topic Who
20:00 Meet and Greet everyone
20:10 a tour of divf, the central office of the OCTOI network based on yate + dahdi-trunkdev laforge

Retronetworking Peertube channel

Added by laforge about 1 month ago

We're happy to announce the @retronetworking@tube.tchncs.de peertube1 channel, which will be used to post videos related to retronetworking topics.

The initial content is timelapse videos of the recent activities around the Rescue of a Siemens EWSD exchange

1 Peertube is a federated, open source video sharing system built on Open Source Software using the ActivityPub protocol many people know from Mastodon. See https://joinpeertube.org/ for more information about it.

We're happy to announce the next incarnation of RetroNetCall, the retronetworking oriented spin-off of OsmoDevCall

This time, there's no formal presentation. However, laforge (and maybe some others) can report on
  • The rescuing efforts of an EWSD (digital telephony exchange) that was recently transported to its new home with jolly
  • Some initial research into the BildTel_001, presumably the first ISDN video telephone in the German ISDN network

retronetworking category in new Osmocom discourse

Added by laforge 5 months ago

As our mailing lists aren't really seeing much use, and the redmine Forums never really saw any use, I decided to try a different path and deploy an instance of the discourse forum software at https://discourse.osmocom.org/

Within this Osmocom discourse, there is a Retronetworking category, with various sub-categories for related topics such as ISDN or Teletex.

There also is a German language corner for retronetworking discussions related to activities specifically happening in Germany, and to be more accessible for German native spakers who may not be confident in their English language proficiency.

Everyone interested is invite to join our discourse.

2023-07-05: RetroNetCall (Teletext)

We're happy to announce the next incarnation of RetroNetCall, the retronetworking oriented spin-off of OsmoDevCall

This time, casandro will be presenting on Teletext: A digital medium transcending a factor of 10⁶ in technical progress.

NOTE: Teletext (covered here) is the service transporting textual information alongside TV broadcast signals. It is not to be confused with the completely unrelated Teletex (subject of previous RetroNetCall)!

This time, laforge will be presenting on Teletex: Between Telex and Telefax.

Everyone knows Telefax, and most people will have heard what Telex was. Few people are aware of the designated intermediate system Teletex. It was used like a "remote type writer", where formatted pages of (monospaced) text could be entered, transmitted and printed by a remote typewriter.

2023-05-03: RetroNetCall (E1: The analog side, part 1)

Added by laforge 7 months ago

We're happy to announce the next incarnation of RetroNetCall, the retronetworking oriented spin-off of OsmoDevCall

This time, tnt will be presenting part 1 of E1: The analog side.

Many of us know E1 circuits from ISDN or GSM A-bis, and are familiar with the digital side of them. Building a related E1 interface mostly uses [still] available LIU (Line Interface Unit) integrated circuits. tnt took it one step further and started to think along the lines of what if I had to do my own LIU analog circuit design?
