ETSI GMR Specificatiosn

GMR (GEO-Mobile Radio) is a communication system specified at ETSI (European Telecommunications Standardization Institute).

GMR is based heavily by GSM, which was also originally specified by ETSI.

As there are so many areas of overlap and re-use between GSM and GMR, the GMR specifications in fact only
specify the differences to the GSM system. Many GSM documents are referenced completely, others on a paragraph/chapter
base.

Revisions

GMR comes in three revisions (so far)
  • GMR Release 1 (GMR-1) -- Voice telephony and SMS only
  • GMR Release 2 (GmPRS) -- Packet Data services similar to GPRS
  • GMR Release 3 (GMR 3G)

Specification Numbering Scheme

Differences to GSM

  • the GBCH for broadcasting GPS ephemeris data on the CCCH downlink ARFCN was introduced
  • the RACH request (Channel Request) includes GPS coordinates and the called number (in plaintext!)
  • there is a new A5/2 cipher variant, specific to GMR-1
  • pi/4 QPSK modulation instead of GMSK
  • different bursts and TDMA multiplex / multi-frame
  • different speech codecs (lower bitrate), AMBE
  • new lower-bitrate TCH and SDCCH types (TCH3, TCH6, SDDCH3, SDCCH6)
  • LAPDm has a k=16 window size for outstanding unacknowledged segments (due to satellite delays)

Dictionary

GMR TS 01.201 gives a good overview about the terminology differences between GSM and GMR, specifically
  • BSC -> GSC
  • BSS -> GSS
  • BTS -> GTS
  • Cell -> Spot beam
  • GSM -> GMR
  • ME -> MES-ME
  • MS -> MES-MS
  • MSC -> GSS-MSC
